I have a 1984 Toyota SDK8 that I bought a number of years ago. It is a great skid loader, but because they are no longer imported into the US, it is a real pain to find any info. I am going to start posting all of the information I have about it on this page, hopefully some other folks will add any information that they may have. Right now I am focused on getting the starter turning over reliably, it usually only turns over about once every four or five tries.
My bucket attachment is also all mangled up, I am curious if anyone has replaced their’s with a BobCat Quick Tach attachment plate?

Hi, Thanks for the pictures of your SDK8. I just bought one.
I have 2 problems that you might have encountered. First is I cannot get it to stay running. It will start and then dies right away. None of the lights light up on the dash so i assuming it is just a wiring problem. What engine is this?
Second
My pedals are stuck and only work together. The bucket will not go back up.
Thanks for any ideas.
I have two ideas.
1) The engine is a Toyota 2J. There is a EDIC control unit that moves the fuel control from off, on, and start. It moves the fuel off when it senses a loss in oil pressure. It seems as if many folks disconnect the EDIC, and operate the fuel control manually with a cable into the cab. That is the way mine is setup. You could test this pretty easily. It could also not be seeing oil pressure, that will also cause the EDIC to shut off fuel.
2) There is a safety interlock for the pedals, it sounds like it MAY be sticking on yours. Look for a rod that locks the pedals and the solenoid that controls it. Again, many people have hot wired this solenoid.
Where are you located?
hi, i have a 1989? 2sdk8. i noticed hydraulic oil in the drive gear housing(ran out of fill plug). guessing the hydr motor has a seal blown. any ideas? thanks
hi mate more than likely on your desil pump theirs a arm that is for a return for when you shut the engine down maybe its come off?or it could have a faulty fuse ,,as i have the same model myself .and your solinoid for your pedals seem like its broken down ,i did away with the solinoid on mine and now it works fine ,,hope this night be of some help to you cheers ,
phil do you no of any sdk8 being wrecked over their mate your help would be appreciated, cheers ,,
Hello Collect
I have a problem with the starter, burned all but unfortunately I can delete the serial number and I can not see it.
I would ask if someone can give me the number of starter
James, have you gotten anywhere with your motor seal? I think my SDK8 has a blown seal too on the left motor.. my left drive is choppy also, only does about half the speed of the right, suspect that is signs of bigger problems..
Being new to hydraulic maintenance, found an interesting read, hydraulic tutorials for any one interested, very informative http://www.hydraulicsupermarket.com/technical.html

What hydraulic oil is reccomended for the toyota skidsteer? Somewhere I read Ford Type F hydraulic oil, that sounds like power steering oil to me.
hi there can one tell me where i can find a shop manel for a 2sdk7
Hydraulic Oil
—————-
There is a recommendation at http://www.heavyequipmentforums.com/Forum/showthread.php?t=12130 (post # 13) to use “Automatic Transmission Fluid – Type F 6.6 Gallons (25L)”, which I believe is what the previous owner has put in mine.
Slow RHS & a bit chatty
———————–
Mine does this on the left, and leaks a bucket load of hydraulic fluid between the frame and the motor mount… I bet the motor seal is blown in mine.. If you are not loosing oil, then perhaps you may try bleeding the air from the hydraulics… service manual has a section on this

For those who have not spotted the link on this page, Garry has posted the repair manual pdf. http://www.z-car.com/SDK8/Toyota_Skid_Steer_sdk6-8_repair_manual.pdf

good tips, but anyone got a 3SDK8 with 1DZ toyota engine torque specs. Thanks sam
to all those who have oil leak at their drive or into the final drive ,it will be the drive motor seal. Don’t use after market and don’t split your hydra motor as they are match fitted.Toyota recommend using 20w30 eng oil in the hyd.

any info on the backhoe attachment? I have one and the top flange holding the main pin broke off. It’s a rather straight forward welding job, but there are “all sorts” of hydraulic hoses to remove…not sure where to begin…and don’t have a manual…
Here is a website I put together this Spring about my machine. I am still using my machine although I need to replace a linkage for the right arm.

Hello
I’ve just purchased a used 2SDK7 I think. It has the 4cyl 2J engine. Got it cheap but the engine is out and top end disassembled. Head has crack, has anyone sourced cylinder head for this motor or re-powered with other?? Thanks
the 2J engine appeared in forklifts and some ToyoAce vehicles, found the starter and injection pumps are different on these models – Mobil here in NZ have recomended Mobil AgriSuper oil for engine, hydraulics and side transmission area (bung between wheels)
has anyone got a manual on the engine? cant find out how to set the valve clearance and setting up at TDC doesnt work, above manual has the clearance and how to remove engine but thats all
Regarding Hydraulic oil filter, the Napa number above should be 1551, WIX P/N 51551, Donaldson P/N P551551

Any one know of where to get parts for the HST pump? Was quoted $425 from Toyota Lift for a genuine seal kit for it, there seems to be very little info out there on the Sundstrand Daikin PV1818AR-N41D pump. Seems like its a rare model of pump.

hi i put a 4y petrol engine in mine had to make pump housing fit made a template out of perspex and then drill pump housinga bit fidly but can be done took both flywheel and got the matched for crankshaft cost 150 dolars gad to move oil filter made a plate with pipes . idz starter fited ok but had to packit back with 2 washers as itr stayed engaged . ok now the pump . this is for your rams to go upand down . imade a p-late that works as engine mount and had a82.5 mm holoe driloed into a squre 150by 150 mm 6mm plate and lso mountred alternator this took the longest time and cost about 300 dollars to get parts machined . i used halfinch chain sprockets machined to fit on crank shft pully and had the same sise sproket fited to pump the sprokets are about same sise as original drives also had to make exaust manifold to fit .if you cant do most of the work yourself i would not recomend it has taken me abvout 100 hours email me for more info [email protected] . unfortunatly the idz pump housing does not match and other toyota bell housing so a similar e4ngine is the best bet .i was quoted 8500 for one

Hello Fellow 2sdk owners. I’ve finally gotten mine up and running, complete engine rebuild and reconditioned head this machine is working well! I found a 2J engine manual off e-bay and it was a great help! I have about 15 hours on machine, overall hour meter shows 2,400. Need to check EDIC and voltage regulator. Machine needs paint and really nothing else. I have some gnarly noise comming from final drive when turning at full speed for slight corner. Maybe Chains n sprockets? If anyone needs any spec or copy of the 2J engine section I’ll help you out! Good luck

Did you ever get your starter issue resolved? I was wondering if it was the over-running clutch in the starter or worn teeth on your flywheel ring gear? My SDK8 just started acting up the same way, but more so when it’s very cold like under 25 degrees (F). Tomorrow we have a heat wave (40 + degrees (F)) and I will attempt to check it out.

Hi thanks for the helpful info on these skid steers. One question. Do you know if thes skid steers cam out with a certain manufactures bucket. Or could they be anyones. As I have a SDK8 with a leaking 4 in 1 bucket cylinder and can’t find any serial numbers on it and need some parts pictures. Any info would be awsome thanks.
